Dr Martens wins lawyer from Abbey

R Griggs Group, the company which makes the Dr Martens brand, has appointed William Johnson from Abbey National as group lawyer and company secretary. The hire comes as part of an internal restructure.

Johnson will be based at the company’s Northamptonshire headquarters. He joins on 1 May from Abbey National after four years of service there. He will take over from Howard Johnson who is moving within the R Griggs Group.

William Johnson was formerly legal services director at TSB, (now Lloyds TSB). He represented TSB during the merger talks with Lloyds.

He says: “My appointment at Dr Martens is a result of the company recognising the need for additional internal legal support.”

He leaves Abbey National at a time when the Competition Commission is carrying out an inquiry into the proposed acquisition of Abbey National by Lloyds TSB. The commission’s decision on the merger is expected to be announced later this year.
