Work Life Quiz: Raj Koria, Halebury

Raj Koria

What was your first ever job?

When at school, one summer I worked as a postman in Birmingham.

What was your worst experience as a trainee?

I really enjoyed my training, but my most disappointing experience was my only shot at advocacy. I had to make a fairly routine application, but I prepared well and made my plea. The judge was about to grant it when the pupil barrister working on the matter ran up and asked for permission to withdraw the application as the partner had changed her mind.

What do you do at weekends?

Take advantage of what London has to offer by going to galleries, sports events, the cinema and so on.

If you weren’t a lawyer what would you have been?

In my teens I wanted to join the RAF to become a pilot, but my eyesight put a stop to that. Now, if I had a change of career I’d go into photography.

What was the first record you ever bought?

Parklife by Blur.

Who’s your hero and why?

Sir Stephen Redgrave. He was at the top of an endurance sport for 20 years. He also seems a really decent bloke.

What’s your biggest work/career mistake?

Not seeking to move into the sports industry sooner.

What’s the most exciting deal or case you have worked on?

It’s more of a project really – the delivery of the FIFA World Cup. As a boy I was glued to the TV when it was on, as were millions around the world. To become part of that was unforgettable and inspiring.

If you were stranded on a desert island what two luxury items would you take?

My iPad and a good pillow.

Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with and why?

Fat Bastard from the Austin Powers films, for fairly obvious reasons.

Tell us two truths and one lie about yourself (in any order)…

I suffer from arachnophobia; I developed a liking for single malt whisky purely to impress the father of my then-girlfriend; I’m so keen on DIY that I own a tool belt.
