While munching on a bacon butty at the Law Society’s opening of the legal year breakfast last Monday (1 October), one Tulkinghorn scribe was musing on the question: are lawyers more like gazelles than lions?
A strange question? Not at all.
In Law Society president Andrew Holyrood’s address he said he was reminded of an old African proverb about gazelles having to run faster than lions or they are eaten and lions needing to run faster than the slowest gazelle or starve.
Holyrood said lawyers should all be gazelles to make sure they’re running ahead of the competition.
Tulkinghorn has subsequently heard that originally the speech said lawyers should all be lions, but strangely this was vetoed.
Perhaps eating the competition isn’t an image the Law Society really wants to promote.
