McDermott Will & Emery has suffered the loss of its London head of IP, Larry Cohen, who has defected to US rivals Latham & Watkins.

The firm has suffered a high number of high profile departures recently including former corporate head, William Charnley, who moved to Mayer Brown earlier this month and former head of employment Fraser Younson, who defected to Berwin Leighton Paisner last year.

Despite partner departures and criticisms of a lack of focus within the office head, David Dalgarno, insists London is as strong as ever.

Dalgarno commented: “We don’t want to maintain the rainmaker model that is so popular in the London market. We want to build a strong team across the board, with quality throughout the firm.”

Dalgarno added that the firm wants to move away from the emphasis on an entrepreneurialism that once typified the London office and enabled the firm to build up in the capital.

Cohen has advised on a number of high profile disputes including recently being instructed by sports promotions Zuffa in its High Court dispute over the rights to the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
