Commercial set 3 Verulam Buildings has struck a deal allowing it to utilise Old Square Chambers’ former home.3 Verulam, which already occupies the third, fourth and top two floors of Five Verulam Buildings, signed a lease with Lincoln’s Inn at the end of last year enabling it to take over occupancy of the ground and first floors.
Old Square previously occupied both floors before relocating to 10-11 Bedford Row last October in order to consolidate the chambers in the one location.3 Verulam’s agreement means the set, which has more than 60 barristers, now has the rights to the whole of Verulam Buildings.
Renovation work on Old Square’s former premises has already begun.
Once the works are complete the administrative arm of 3 Verulam, including the senior and junior clerks, will move from number 3 to number 1 to free up more space for larger barrister rooms.
Senior clerk at 3 Verulam Nicholas Hill said some may see this as an indication that the set is looking to expand, but stresses that this is not the case.
“At this moment in time we have no official policy to expand,” said Hill. “In 10 years’ time we do see ourselves being a larger set, but at the present the property expansion means we can increase our facilities and more barristers will be able to have a room with a view of the picturesque gardens at Gray’s Inn.”
