While Tulkinghorn is on the subject of US firms, let’s have a little dig at another.
Now, nobody at The Lawyer would be arrogant enough to assume that everybody working in the legal market will read the magazine regularly (honest!). But we would have thought that, for anyone working in a law firm, the name of the esteemed magazine might have been a bit of a giveaway as to what it is about.
But last week one of Tulkinghorn’s scribes had occasion to visit the august halls of US blue-blood Simpson Thacher. On arrival the hack was quizzed by the receptionist as to the reason for her meeting and her place of business. “The Lawyer,” came the reply. “The Royal?” came the response. “No, The Lawyer,” she insisted. “The Loyal?”came the reply. “No, The Lawyer,” the scribe said, patiently.
“How do you spell The Lawyer?”
In the wrong job, perhaps?
