DWS v DLA Piper for Sheffield’s Tevez spat

Arch rivals Denton Wilde Sapte (DWS) and DLA Piper will square off in the fight between Sheffield United FC and the Premier League over the controversial Carlos Tevez affair.

The Premier League has brought in DLA Piper sports ace Mark Gay to defend itself against Sheffield United, advised by DWS. DWS was hit two years ago by the mass defection of the majority of its technology, media and telecoms group to DLA Piper.

The dispute is over West Ham FC’s signing of Argentine star Carlos Tevez and represents the first time that the Premier League has found itself in arbitration proceedings.

Last month West Ham was fined a record £5.5m for signing Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano because the players were part-owned by other companies.

DWS will argue that the Premier League should have levied heavier penalties on the club.

The firm will also assert that Tevez should not have been eligible to play for West Ham after the decision by the Premier League’s disciplinary body.

Tevez scored the winning goal for West Ham against Manchester United FC last week, which contributed towards Sheffield United’s relegation and West Ham staying in the top flight.
