Canon appoints new Emea legal chief

Canon Europe has a new legal chief, scooping Fujitsu’s former Europe, the Middle East and Africa head of legal services David Bateson to replace Michio Suzuki.

Bateson joined in August last year and has been slowly taking over the reins from Suzuki to head up the 22-lawyer team in Europe.

Suzuki is leaving the European team after 16 years to take up a central legal role with Canon Inc. in Tokyo.

Bateson said: “I believe my team and I have a crucial role to play as Canon Europe continues to transform itself into a world class organisation.

“The pace of change in the business challenges us to innovate, not only in a technical, legal sense but also in a strategic sense.”

In his new role, Bateson will be responsible for developing a governmental affairs and lobbying capability in Europe. At the moment the company is lobbying in Germany on copyright law.
