Bingham rebuilds finance with Shearman hire

The London office of US firm Bingham McCutchen has mitigated the flow of recent departures in its finance group by hiring a Shearman & Sterling lawyer.

Elisabeth Baltay, who was counsel at Shearman, joins Bingham as a partner. She has particular experience in project finance and structured finance. Her arrival takes the number of lawyers in Bingham’s London structured finance and banking group to nine.

It is less than a month since Bingham’s 36-lawyer London office lost banking and finance partner Sarah Coucher to DLA Piper (The Lawyer, 23 April), the latest in a string of departures that include partner Andy Rothenberg, who joined Jones Day.

However in addition to Baltay, the firm has recently hired on the associate side Michael Mansell from Clifford Chance and Jeff Bell from Simpson Thacher & Bartlett.

Bingham’s London managing partner, James Roome said: “Elisabeth’s arrival demonstrates our continued investment in the growth of our London Finance practice and our commitment to the development of our financial institutions client base.”
