The right of authorities at Broadmoor Hospital to introduce random searches of patients is scheduled to be tested at the High Court this week. A group of patients is seeking judicial review of the decision to introduce searches, reported to be for the purpose of flushing out hidden drugs, weapons and pornography. A temporary injunction has already been granted by Mr Justice Maurice Kay preventing implementation of the new searches, pending a full investigation. The week before last, leave was given for judicial review to be sought with a view to having the searches quashed or to obtaining a declaration that they are unlawful.
