Men are more equal

It comes as no surprise that women solicitors are paid less than their male counterparts. The article in The Lawyer, 8 July, merely confirmed statistics from the Young Women Lawyers group published earlier this year and concerns raised at the Woman Lawyer Conference, as well as anecdotal evidence at the Bar that women barristers tend to be diverted into the less lucrative areas of practice and those funded by legal aid.

The fact that current Law Society president Tony Girling said he considered firms were not pursuing a policy of discrimination does little to inspire confidence – is it not more worrying that they are not even conscious of such a practice?

Will the new president of the Law Society take effective steps to ensure equality of pay and treatment? Or are the candidates too busy scoring political points off each other?
