Dibb Lupton Alsop's Leeds' office has poached an in-house lawyer from the Australian Olympic Committee.
Andrew Symms is joining the firm's property and construction department in mid-March as a partner.
Leeds regional managing partner Neil Mclean claims the appointment is a coup for the office.
He says: “He was not looking to come to Yorkshire but we had some discussions with him about what we wanted to do and he was very excited about that. We pulled him away from the region he was going to.”
UK-trained Symms was at leading Australian firm Mallesons Stephen Jaques' Sydney office prior to taking an in-house role at the Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games.
But he decided he wanted to return to practising UK law within the country.
Mclean puts Symms' decision to join Dibbs in Yorkshire down to the growing amount of project work in the region.
He says: “We are doing this, and will be doing other partner recruits, because we see considerable potential in the region.”
The firm is also moving corporate partner Brian Clark from the Birmingham office to the Leeds operation to work on projects and public finance.
