Bringing together two law firms in different countries is not an easy job – so a few hiccups are to be expected, especially, it seems, when it comes to learning foreign names.
For example, a Wolfgang in a London office would stand out like a sore thumb.
So Clifford Chance could be forgiven for mixing up a couple of Wolfgangs in its new merger partner Punder Volhard Weber & Axster.
Clifford Chance lawyers believed that the new global head of property put forward by Punders was going to be Wolfgang Flehinghaus, Punders head of property in Dusseldorf. In fact, a different Wolfgang was preparing to take on the post.
The new global head of property sitting on the merged firm's executive committee will instead be Wolfgang Usinger, head of the Berlin office and former head of property for the German firm.
Punders managing partner Peter Nagele says that Flehinghaus will be continuing his current role within Germany while Usinger takes on the global role.
