Wedlake ;Bell ;has launched a redundancy consultation ;with ;six lawyers and 11 support staff.
The cuts will affect staff in the commercial property department as well as other practice areas. Nine per cent of the firm’s 190 staff are likely to be laid off.
According to Wedlake Bell, staff have been offered “enhanced ;redundancy packages”. This is understood to be greater than 1.5 times the statutory minimum payout – normally £330 per year worked – but the firm would not specify the exact amount.
Although regulation places a limit on payments to those employed for more than 30 years, the firm has removed ;that ;cap. ;It will also contract external consultants to provide outplacement services.
Managing ;partner Philip Matthews said: “It’s obviously regrettable that we’ve had to make these redundancies and we’ll offer all the support that we can to departing colleagues.”
