Beatrice Mtetwa, the Zimbabwe lawyer currently acting to prevent the closure of the country’s last independent newspaper, has been brutally attacked by police just days before her court hearing.
Mtetwa, who also represented The Guardian reporter Andy Meldrum when he was illegally deported by the Mugabe regime, has been advising The Daily News, which was shut down a month ago by the police.
A court hearing was due on 16 October, but on 12 October Mtetwa was allegedly beaten by police after she contacted them for help her following a carjacking.
Mtetwa is chairperson of the Zimbabwe Law Society Human Rights Committee and the senior partner of local firm Kanot & Immerman.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police could not be reached for comment.
