Work Life Quiz: Gary Assim, Shoosmiths

Gary Assim

What was your first-ever job?

Butcher’s assistant.

What was your worst experience as a trainee?

My six months in commercial property. It’s thanks to Rosie, the partners’ PA, that I’m still a lawyer.

What’s the toughest thing about your job?

Inspiring young lawyers to put their clients first, be less legalistic and be more commercial.

What’s your biggest work/career mistake and what did you learn?

Taking for granted that an agreed extension of time application before a High Court Master meant I did not have to prepare properly. I always prepare properly now.

Where’s the best place to go if you want to find out what’s really going on in the office?

The bar after work.

What do you do at weekends?

Try to play golf, watch Tottenham Hotspur or my sons play sport and attempt DIY.

If you weren’t a lawyer what would you have been?

A fighter pilot – I was taken to an air show at the age of 6 and really wanted to be one of the pilots, but after obtaining my gliding licence my eyesight deteriorated and that was that.

What’s your favourite film?

Top Gun.

What was the first record you ever bought?

Dark Side of the Moon, by Pink Floyd.

What’s the best thing about your job?

Meeting up with clients to learn more about their business and finding out what common areas of interest we have – there’s always something.

What car do you drive?

Maserati Granturismo unless I’m going to the train station, in which case it’s an old Vauxhall Corsa.

What’s the most exciting deal/case you’ve worked on?

Acting for Jimmy Choo when we stopped a major high street retailer selling copycat clutch bags.

What’s the worst partner conference location you’ve attended and why?

Radisson East Midlands Airport. It’s frustrating watching people fly away when you’re stuck there.

Tell us two truths and one lie about yourself (in any order)…

My ski poles are hollow and I keep vodka in them; I once had dinner with Georgio Armani; after our college boat club dinner I slept with my head in the toilet.
