Paul Hastings Janofsky & Walker has snared Jones Day arbitration of counsel and bengoshi Haig Oghigian for its Tokyo office.
Ohigian, a specialist in international litigation and commercial arbitration, has practised in Canada and Japan for 25 years and is one of the few registered foreign bengoshi in Japan.
Paul Hastings Tokyo chair Kooki Suzuki said a growing number of Japanese corporations were adopting arbitration clauses in their M&A and joint venture agreements.
“We expect more commercial arbitrations to be brought before Japanese and international arbitral institutions,” he said. “Haig’s appointment enables us to provide a unique one-stop shopping service for complex arbitration and compliance issues.”
The hire comes just six months after Paul Hastings merged with domestic Japan-ese firm Taiyo Law Office.
