Richards Butler managing partner Roger Parker led from the front last Monday evening (6 June), but his brave display was not enough to beat an in-form team from The Lawyer in an all-star, five-a-side rematch.
The hacks had emerged victorious the last time these two footballing heavyweights met on a freezing January night. This time the sun shone and the Pimms flowed, but although the omens were good for Richards Butler, The Lawyer held on to take the game by four goals to three.
Following a cagey, tense and tight opening 10 minutes, Richards Butler opened the scoring with a fine display of quick-fire passing and finishing. The Lawyer countered within minutes though, and the teams made it to half time all square.
The second half saw both re-energised teams come out fighting and it was Parker’s boys who edged ahead with a finely drilled long shot. But the goal of the game came after a length-of-the-pitch passing movement from The Lawyer’s very own deputy editor Matheu Swallow, which was converted spectacularly by features editor Matt Byrne with an unstoppable drive.
The victory in the closely-fought but good-humoured battle was celebrated in time-honoured fashion in the boozer next door. Bring on round three…
