Shropshire County Council legal chief Claire Porter has been given the top legal role at the new unified Shropshire authority.

Shropshire was one of nine regions to unite district, borough and county councils under a single unitary authority on 1 April.

Porter will be in charge of lawyers from the county council and five borough and district authorities.

It is understood that around 20 lawyers will work in the unified legal team.

Porter’s title is head of legal, while Richard Thomas has been appointed head of democratic services.

Last week the Cheshire West unitary council hired former Wirral Borough Council legal head Simon Goacher.

The Cheshire East authority has appointed Chris Chapman from Ellesmere Port and Neston Borough Council.

In April 44 regional councils were replaced by nine unitary authorities.
