Court of Appeal judge Lord Justice Chadwick has today (12 November) retired from the bench to rejoin his old chambers One Essex Court.
Chadwick, who was made up to the bench 16 years ago, becomes an associate member of the set, as under the bar rules the judge cannot rejoin as a tenant. His practice offers his services in arbitration and expert determination.
On his decision to go back to the bar, Chadwick said: “After six years as a High Court judge and 10 years in the Court of Appeal it was time for a new challenge while I’m still young enough to tackle it – and what better way than returning to my old chambers.”
Senior clerk at One Essex Court Paul Shrubsall said the set is delighted that Chadwick has returned.
“I was his clerk at the bar for many years and it’s excellent to be able to renew that relationship,” said Shrubsall. “Sir John’s return to chambers adds to our resources in the field of arbitration.
“He’ll join Alan Redfern, Ian Glick, Peter Leaver and Andrew Foyle and other retired judges as part of the arbitration team.”
