Minneapolis-based US firm Dorsey & Whitney is planning to launch an office in Sydney as its base for the Asian market.
London-based capital markets partner John Chrisman, who joined Dorsey from Coudert Brothers in 2005, will lead the team.
Chrisman commented: “Dorsey & Whitney is in the planning stages and looking at the possibility of opening an office in Sydney in late 2008.”
The firm looked at Singapore and Hong Kong but Sydney would cost less and Chrisman is keen on a move to his homeland. Chrisman’s practice focuses on capital markets work in India.
Chrisman said: “The office would consist of a small team of our US capital markets lawyers focused on the Australian, Indian and Greater China markets.
“Dorsey & Whitney has no present intention to practice Australian law in Sydney, but instead looks forward to building its relationships with Australian law firms.”
