Spanish independent firm Rodes y Sala Abogados is planning to triple the size of its Madrid office with a view to forming an exclusive alliance with a UK firm.
Madrid managing partner Julio Veloso said: “We’re very focused on our international approach and would like to enter into an alliance agreement with other firms.
“To start with, we would have to have the UK, but we would also like coverage in France, Italy and Portugal. That’s the target for us in the next few years.”
Rodes has a turnover of around e5m (£2.54m) and specialises in private equity, banking and tax advice.
Veloso said a network would enable the firm to win more cross-border transactional work.
The firm will boost its Madrid office from 350sq m to 1,100sq m to accommodate future growth. Veloso said he was close to signing an agreement to rent out another floor of its Madrid office building.
At the moment the Madrid office accounts for around a third of the firm’s 40 lawyers, most of whom are based in Barcelona. Veloso said he wanted the Madrid office to grow to around 30 lawyers within the next two or three years. He has targeted real estate and arbitration as potential growth areas for the firm.
Rodes has just promoted two partners, both based in the Barcelona office. Litigation partner Jaime Fernandez and labour law specialist Guillermo Puig bring the total number of partners to 11.
