EU pledges £1.3m aid for Kosovo legal system plan

Money will be directed to the Kosovo Chamber of Advocates, which received aid last year to establish a legal aid system for the poor. Forty legal aid desks have been opened as a result.
The European Agency for Reconstruction (EAR) said that this year EU funds would also be spent on the “development of a coordinated, sustainable legal system for Kosovo in both civil and criminal matters, in compliance with applicable international standards”.
An agency memo said legal experts would be hired to help develop the necessary legal and regulatory framework. EAR programme manager Sofia Carrondo added: “The project seeks to enhance the rule of law through a fair and proper administration of justice, and to guarantee access to legal advice to vulnerable groups of the population.”
