North East firm BHP Law prides itself on its ability to provide a wide range of services for its predominantly regionally based clients.

The firm’s core commercial market is small- and medium-sized companies. The private client side is wideranging, acting for large family trusts as well as members of the general public who need traditional legal services such as wills. The latter portion of the business contributes around £1.5m of turnover.

Commercial litigation and personal injury bring in around £1.2m each, while the family department contributes £1m. BHP recently launched a separate non-legal area called BHP Financial Management, which provides financial advice.

“We’ve spun out our financial advisory business into a joint venture with a company based in Hull,” says managing partner John Pratt. “With the impending changes in the regulation of financial services businesses in 2012, we see great scope for this part of the business growing in size.”

The firm has also established an estate agency business called BHP Home and launched BHP Sport, a sports agency that provides both player representation services and legal advice. “It includes former professionals from the football world working with a cross-practice team from BHP,” claims Pratt. “We cover private client, commercial property, litigation and corporate expertise for professionals involved in sport and entertainment.”

Pratt says that while many firms have concentrated their resources on one site, BHP has taken the reverse approach. “We’ve recognised that clients prefer to deal with solicitors in their own area, provided they can access a quality service,” he says. “This applies equally to businesses and private clients.”
