Trainees get their way

You might think that when you join a law firm you’re the smallest cog in a very large machine. But trainees have a bit more of a voice than you might think.

Look at what’s just happened at national firm Addleshaw Goddard. As all the big City names like Clifford Chance and Linklaters were announcing stonking great salary rises for newly-qualifieds. Addleshaws tried to sit it out until September.

Until a mini-revolution in the ranks, that is. After pressure from trainees the firm’s management brought forward the rises by three months.

London newly-qualifieds will get £64,000, up from £53,000. Salaries in the Manchester and Leeds offices have also been raised, from £35,000 to £40,000.

That’s what I call a nice bit of direct action
