Herbies scoops Lehman’s Mifid expert

Herbert Smith has hired a senior lawyer from Lehman Brothers as a non-contentious regulatory specialist for the firm’s growing financial services regulatory (FSR) practice.

Patrick Buckingham is currently european regulatory counsel at Lehman. He joined Lehman in 2004 after six years at Clifford Chance, having qualified with Slaughter and May.

Herbert Smith partner Martyn Hopper, who heads the FSR practice, said: “Patrick will bring significant firepower to our strong non-contentious FSR capability and will help the firm secure greater market share of financial institution mandates on regulatory compliance issues.”

Buckingham is best known as a specialist in the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (Mifid), which comes into effect on 1 November this year. He will advise primarily on regulatory issues arising on corporate and finance transactions and on compliance and risk management issues facing financial institutions.

Buckingham is expected to join Herbert in September.
