Arden takes over helm at commission

THE HIGH Court judge who helped raise the profile of the Law Commission is stepping down as its chair.

Mr Justice Brooke's term of office at the commission has come to an end and his position is being taken next month by Mrs Justice Arden, a High Court Chancery judge since 1993.

The commission has seen a leap in the number of its reports implemented. In the last two sessions of Parliament 13 were implemented, compared to four in the session before.

Michael Sayers, secretary of the commission, said of Brooke: “I think its fair to say the Law Commission has been put on the public map rather more during his time.”

He said Arden would bring her “own skills and specialisms” to the job.

Attorney General to the Duchy of Lancaster between 1991 and 1993, she has been a member of the Financial Law Panel since 1993.
