Lovells is planning to build an IP practice in the US following the lateral hire of partner Veronica Mullally from Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe.
The firm’s US regional managing partner Marc Gottridge said IP is set to be a major growth area for the firm, one that has been driven primarily by client demand.
“If you look at the US market, IP litigation, particularly high-stake patent litigation, is a juggernaut,” he said. “There’s so much of this work on, and in our case our involvement is client-driven.
“We go into practice areas where we have strength but also where our clients want us to be.”
Gottridge went on to say that Lovells’ IP practice is well known in Asia and Europe, adding that the firm intends building a strong practice in the US to complement its European and Asian capabilities.
“The plan is that work will come to that practice in the US from some of the people that have kept the practice busy in Asia and Europe,” he added.
