MAB and McGrigors act on Asda’s partnership with website

Matthew Arnold & Baldwin (MAB) and McGrigors have advised on an agreement between supermarket giant Asda and price comparison website

The deal will see Asda use technology developed by the independent price comparison site to launch a scheme whereby shoppers will be refunded the difference if they find their purchases cheaper at a rival supermarket.

MAB IP partner Mark Weston, who has advised the website since it was founded in 2005, led on the deal for mysupermarket, while McGrigors technology partner Matthew Godfrey-Faussett acted for Asda.

Weston said: “We’re proud to be involved in a deal that’s caused a huge buzz in the retailing world and one that could deliver a potentially knock-out salvo in the ongoing supermarket price war.”

McGrigors won the mandate for Asda after it was one of three firms named on the chain’s slimmed-down commercial and corporate panel last year. The other firms on the panel are Pinsent Masons and Ward Hadaway. Slaughter and May continues to advise it on strategic competition issues.
