BAR leader Peter Goldsmith QC will chair a new International Bar Association steering group examining the globalisation of law.
Initiated by IBA president Professor Ross Harper, the group, which also includes former president of the American Bar Association William Ide III and current chair of the Council of Bars and Law Societies of the European Union, Heinz Weil, is expected to report on its preliminary work in January.
“We need greater understanding and clarity of laws in different countries,” said Goldsmith. “Lawyers should recognise the ability to harness the immense opportunity presented by a revolution of information and technology to the advantage of legal services consumers. I believe that legal education should recognise the increasing globalisation of the economy and legal problems.”
The Law Society's international human rights working party will discuss the administration of justice in Northern Ireland in a report to be released at Chancery Lane on Monday. The report, Northern Ireland: An Emergency Ended?, examines whether laws enacted to deal with sectarian violence and terrorism, should be repealed now the IRA cease-fire has held for over a year. The report's authors will speak at a press conference at the Law Society.
