Consumer goods giant Unilever is working on a massive overhaul of its legal department.
The company is hoping to complete the restructure of its central legal sites, based at Unilever’s dual head offices in London and Rotterdam, by autumn. The central legal departments are currently split into a number of different functions covering geographical and product lines.
Stephen Williams, general counsel and joint company secretary at Unilever’s London office, says he is implementing the changes to introduce a flatter management structure.
He says:”The way we are starting to work internationally really requires us to look again at the idea of hierarchy which we haven’t made a big thing about but I think that big organisations’ hierarchies are a thing of the past.”
He does not envisage any jobs will be lost within the legal department.
