Work Life Quiz: Catherine Drinnan, Latham & Watkins

Catherine Drinnan

What was your first-ever job?

Weekend assistant in a cattery. While you may love looking after your own cat, looking after 40 belonging to other people is not the same.

What was your worst experience as a trainee?

Having an important client complain to a senior associate about some incorrect advice they said I’d given. I’d never given the advice in question, and I learnt the importance of detailed meeting notes and time entries. The senior associate was supportive and smoothed things over.

What do you do at weekends?

In varying proportions, run, ride, play tennis, see friends, eat and drink to mild excess.

If you weren’t a lawyer what would you have been?

Preferably rich and idle, but realistically, probably in HR.

What’s your favourite film?

Jaws 2.

What was the first record you ever bought?

Hunting High and Low by A-ha.

Who’s your hero and why?

My husband. He’s calm, unflappable and a brilliant cook – the sort of person I’d like to be.

What’s the toughest thing about your job?

The interrupted weekends and holidays.

What car do you drive?

Mercedes SLK and a Range Rover.

What book are you reading?

Bring up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel.

What’s the most exciting deal/case you have worked on and why?

The Harrods acquisition – a high-profile deal with interesting employment and pensions issues, and great teams on both sides.

If you were stranded on a desert island what two luxury items would you take?

My husband and my snorkelling gear.

If a movie was being made about your life, which actor would play you and why?

Kate Winslet as we attended the same drama school for a while – obviously, she was the more successful pupil.

Tell us two truths and one lie about yourself (in any order)…

I have chilli sauce with almost every meal; I’m a dedicated technophile; my favourite subject at school was Latin.
