Goodwin raids pave way for California expansion

Boston-based Goodwin Procter has launched an assault on California, opening in Los Angeles (LA) and San Francisco on the back of raids on Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman and Cooley Godward.

The LA office will be chaired by Lewis Feldman, the former head of the LA real estate and national public finance team at Pillsbury.

Feldman will be joined by three other Pillsbury partners, as first revealed on (26 April).

Paul Churchill, the former head of Cooley’s real estate practice, will lead Goodwin’s San Francisco real estate practice. He will be joined by former Cooley real estate attorney Mark Goldberg, who will also be a partner. Goodwin is taking two more litigation partners from Pillsbury to staff the San Francisco office.

Along with the partners joining the firm from Pillsbury and Cooley, two partners from Goodwin’s New York and Boston offices are relocating to California.

The firm has a total of 650 professionals in total. Despite its recent expansion, Goodwin closed its small New Jersey presence in January to focus on its nearby Manhattan office.

As revealed by The Lawyer (6 February), the firm also plans to launch in London, although no date for this has been confirmed.
