Venture capital house Scottish Equity Partners (SEP) has appointed its first-ever general counsel, after hiring Maclay Murray & Spens associate Andrew Buchan.
Buchan, who had been at Maclays for 12 years, built up a close relationship with SEP in that time, having worked on a number of SEP’s deals while he worked in private practice.
A spokesperson for SEP, which is headquartered in Glasgow, said it had decided to create the general counsel role because the amount of legal work being handled by company secretary Richard Sparrow had increased.
Buchan will work on investment transactions as well as corporate and fund legal issues alongside Sparrow.
SEP is the latest investment house to hire a general counsel. Private equity house Bridgepoint Capital took on Travers Smith partner Charles Barter as its in-house lawyer last year, while Candover Investments, the listed arm of the UK private equity group, hired SRM Global’s chief executive officer as its first general counsel in April.
