Work Life Quiz: Alex Bishop, Shoosmiths

Alex Bishop

What was your first-ever job?

Saturday girl at Superdrug – I now have huge respect for shop assistants who can stay smiling at Christmas time.

What was your worst experience as a trainee?

As agent for a criminal firm. Their client was sent down but clearly wasn’t expecting this as he had booked tickets to the pantomime with his kids that evening. Visiting him in the cells confirmed I had made the right decision joining a commercial firm.

Where is the best place to go if you want to find out what’s really going on in the office?

The smart Ally McBeal-style toilets in the new Birmingham office.

What do you do at weekends?

Biking, pub lunches, spa.

If you weren’t a lawyer what would you have been?

I wanted to be a lawyer from the age of three, which is a bit tragic.
If I had to do something else I’d be a psychologist as I love the psychology of litigation.

Simpsons, Purnells or Opus.

Complete Madness, by Madness.

Who’s your hero and why?

My parents. Hard-working, resilient, inspiring and funny.

Being right all the time.

Turning up for a hearing in open court without a gown. Fortunately, a kind court clerk helped me. Treat everyone with equal respect. Clerks, PAs and secretaries can be your greatest allies.

Lean in; Women, Work and the Will to Lead, by Sheryl Sandberg.

What’s your favourite film?

The Philadelphia Story.

What’s the most exciting deal/case you have worked on?

Freezing the assets of a fraudster (considered a psychopath) for a plc client. The client was a joy and we were fighting for justice. Serving the order gave me great pleasure.
