CITY FIRM Herbert Smith has established a presence in Jakarta through an arrangement with local firm Prof Dr Mariam Darus, Badrulzaram & Partners.
Herbert Smith corporate lawyer Stefan Ricketts has left the firm's London office to work as a full-time consultant with the firm.
He will provide support in Jakarta to local financial institutions, corporate clients and international investors.
Liz McDougall, head of business development at Herbert Smith, said the arrangement was expected to become a formal association.
She said the firm's decision to establish a presence in Jakarta was inspired by the country's fast-growing economy and the success of Herbert Smith's Singapore office which opened last year and now has seven lawyers.
“Overseas lawyers can't practice local law in South East Asia, so it is an arrangement which enables us to co-operate locally to provide a service to international clients and investors,” she said.
The firm also has a representative office in Shanghai and an office in Hong Kong.
McDougall said it was valuable to have close contact with Prof Dr Mariam Darus, as he was one of Indonesia's leading banking and commercial lawyers.
