Sullivan & Cromwell has raided Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy for leading mergers and acquisitions partner Tim Emmerson.
Emmerson, who joined the firm from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in 2003, will join Sullivan’s London office during the first quarter of 2007.
William Plapinger, coordinator of Sullivan & Cromwell’s European offices and managing partner of the firm’s London office, told The Lawyer: “We’re already very strong in M&A and private equity but Tim brings to us expertise in M&A
under English law.
“He adds to the process that we started when we hired Vanessa Blackmore from Allen & Overy last year. Vanessa has expertise in M&A too, but
with capital markets experience. Tim, meanwhile, has expertise in private
equity and M&A.”
Since joining Milbank, Emmerson has been involved in a number of high-profile deals including recently advising three former Misys directors on their £1bn attempted takeover of the company, advising a private equity consortium on its bid for ITV and he has had a role advising Goldman Sachs on Macquarie’s bid for the London Stock Exchange.
Goldman, along with UBS, are shared clients with Sullivan. Prior to joining Milbank, Emmerson was a partner at Freshfields for nine years. Sullivan & Cromwell’s London office is now its largest aside from New York.
Plapinger continued: “Most of our growth has been organic. We’ve made fewer than 10 lateral hires in history. But you can’t grow that domestic law expertise.”
