Bindman leads New Year’s honours list

Geoffrey Bindman QC, the founder of Bindman & Partners, leads the list of lawyers honoured in the New Year’s honours list.

Bindman was knighted for his services to human rights. Other lawyers to be knighted were His Honour Stephen Oliver QC, presiding special commissioner and president of the VAT and Duties Tribunal, and director of public prosecutions and head of the Crown Prosecution Service Kenneth MacDonald.

The vast majority of lawyers honoured came from the public sector but Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer partner Vanessa Knapp was the one exception. She received an OBE for services to corporate law. Knapp was awarded the honour for her role as UK representative of the company law committee for the Council of the Bars and Law Societies of the EU.

Other lawyers honoured include Richard Grimes, the former head of pro bono for the College of Law. Grimes was honoured for his services to pro bono following his LawWorks study of pro bono in law schools.

Regulators honoured include Patent Office chief executive Ronald Marchant, Gambling Commission commissioner David Steen and former Ofcom chief executive Stephen Carter.
