Although it offers clients a full service, covering corporate, litigation, employment and finance law, the firm’s specialities are very much in growth areas, such as telecoms, life sciences and IP issues, with the latter surrounding video games in particular.

The French firm celebrates its second birthday this year, having been founded by former Bird & Bird lawyers Charlotte Tasso-de Panafieu and Hubert Mortemard de Boisse. The duo worked together at Bird & Bird for six years before Tasso-de Panafieu left to work solo and Mortemard de Boisse was put
in charge of the firm’s Lyon office.

They teamed up in 2009 to set up LexCase.

Tasso-de Panafieu explains that the concept was to attract a group of lawyers of a similar generation to work with clients of a similar age, without the fee or conflict of interest pressure of a big firm.

The firm has since grown to 10 partners and another 15 lawyers, drawn from a variety of backgrounds. A number of associates and one partner, Alain Gorny, have also worked for Bird & Bird at various points in their careers, while others have come from both large and small French law firms and the legal arms of the big accountancy firms.

“We wanted to export the experience that we’d gained in major law firms to all offices,” says Tasso-de Panafieu. She explains that LexCase was keen to have offices outside the French capital to offer Paris-style services to the regions. The firm’s single profit pool makes sharing work between Paris, Lyon and Marseille an easy process.

LexCase is set to deepen its capabilities rather than grow significantly in size. Tasso-de Panafieu wants the firm to maintain a flexible and “pragmatic” approach to practising law and also to encourage the career development of younger lawyers.
