Spending all day one ­beautiful sunny Saturday locked in a police station with a client who simply answered “no comment” to every single question asked of him.

Where’s the best place to go if you want to find out what’s really going on in the office?
My PA.

What time do you usually leave the office?
Between 7pm and 8pm.

What do you do at weekends?
Escape to France or go for a run in Regent’s Park, ­followed by as little as ­possible.

What’s your favourite ­restaurant?
The Oyster Bar at Grand Central Station, New York.

If you weren’t a lawyer, what would you have been?
A jewellery designer.

What’s your favourite film?
Pretty Woman.

What was the first record you ever bought?
David Bowie’s Rebel, Rebel.

Who is your hero and why?
The Dalai Lama for ­keeping so calm, so focused and so smiley in the face of such adversity.

What’s the best thing about your job?
The people, both at the firm and the clients.

What’s the toughest thing about your job?
The people, both at the firm and the clients.

What’s your biggest work/career mistake and what did you learn from it?
Relying on someone else to tell me which court I ­needed to be at and then ­turning up at the wrong one. I learnt always to check for myself where I was supposed to be rather than listen to ­anyone else.

What car do you drive?
Volvo C30.

What book are you currently reading?
Love’s Executioner and Other Tales of ­Psychotherapy, by Irvin D Yalom.

What’s your favourite ­children’s book?
The Little White Horse, by Elizabeth Goudge.

What’s the most exciting deal/case you’ve worked on and why?
Land Rover v UPF (2003), because we won against all the odds (I’d given the odds) and we felt we made a difference because of the number of jobs we saved.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what two ­luxury items would you take?
My engagement ring and a lifetime supply of ­champagne.

What’s the worst partner ­conference location you’ve attended and why?
Birmingham, because it was my first and I was ­terrified of all the other partners.

What’s the longest you’ve worked without sleep?
Not very long – just a ­couple of days.

If a movie was being made about your life, which actor would play you and why?
Meryl Streep, because she can turn her hand to ­anything successfully.

Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with and why?
Someone who suffers from claustrophobia.

I am not a control freak.
