Barrister Colleen Hanley has returned to London set 20 Essex Street after only a year at energy watchdog Ofgem.
Hanley, who was widely considered a rising star at the bar, left the set last October to replace Ruth Ashworth as second-in-command of the Ofgem legal team. Ashworth joined the Office of Fair Trading policy and strategy unit (The Lawyer, 13 October 2008).
Ofgem legal director of markets Duncan Sinclair, who co-heads the regulatory body’s legal group, originally brought Hanley on board to deal with contentious matters.
Sinclair said Hanley’s decision to return to the bar was entirely amicable. “She did extremely well while she was here, but she saw her future was at the bar and wanted to return to practice,” he said.
Her return comes after 20 Essex Street brought in new members in the shape of former Court of Appeal judge Simon Tuckey and Michael Moser, who joined as arbitrators.
