What’s your most vivid memory from being a pupil?
Putting my pupilmaster’s leader’s cross-examination notes into a ring binder backwards, so that his questions started at the end.
Who has been the most influential person in your career? Why, and how have they helped you?
My pupilmaster, Elizabeth Gloster (now Gloster LJ). She taught me to analyse and write clearly, structure an argument, stand up to judges and to retain my cool and humour in any adversity. She also encouraged me to move to the Commercial Bar when I was invited into my current Chambers, and has always been a huge support.
What was the best career decision you ever made, and why?
To train as a Civil Recorder. This led to appointment as a Deputy High Court Judge, which enabled me to sit as a judge and see the world from a wider perspective.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to get to where you are/do the job you do?
Do not become over-focused or over-narrow, take the chances when they come, and keep your sense of perspective, balance and humour.
What work or career-related project or activity would you really like to do, but don’t have time for?
Sit as a part-time judge in a Caribbean commercial court.
