What’s your most vivid memory from your early time in the legal sector?
This was only 2.5 years ago! I joined Dentons at a very good point in the sense that we were just embarking on a review of our strategy. It was a really useful process to go through which helped me rapidly understand the market, the industry, our competitors, our business with its unique international platform and most importantly what our clients want from us now and in the future. Our strategy has resulted in a truly innovative and transformative change programme which we’ve got on with at pace – we haven’t looked back!
What is the wisest thing anyone ever said to you (and who said it)?
My dad always had a saying or two and a couple that stand out were ‘Respect yourself and respect from others will follow’; and ‘Work hard and be kind; and don’t take yourself too seriously’. All of those things take you a long way in life and help to keep you sane along the way!
Who (for better or worse) has been the most influential person in your career? Why?
There have been a few. Having two daughters, my dad never held any store in stereotypes and so he always told us we could be anything we chose to be in life and so I have never felt constrained in any way from an early age. I have also been very fortunate to have worked with some truly inspirational leaders, all excellent in their own way for different reasons. I have learned a lot from each of them individually, but together what they have shown me is to be true to your own style of leadership, be authentic.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to get to where you are/do the job you do?
Believe in yourself, take the opportunities to stretch yourself and continue learning, how and whenever they present themselves. Don’t fear change, change is good!
What’s your best friend from university/college doing now?
She is a GP in Devon.
