Hammonds cooks up British Gas meter deal

Hammonds has advised one of the world’s largest smart-meter companies in securing a contract agreement with British Gas.

British Gas will install around 100 million of Landis+Gyr’s electricity and gas smart-meters, alongside touchscreen home displays, in an effort to cut carbon emissions and reduce consumer energy bills by around £200m.

Hammonds won the mandate to advise Landis+Gyr thanks to its longstanding relationship with the client.

The deal, which British Gas claims will be among the fastest smart-meter deployments in Europe, was led by Manchester-based partner Tom Bridgford, while Eversheds partner Simon Crossley advised British Gas on the deal.

Bridgford said: “This has been an exciting and pioneering project to work on. The deal was the first of its kind in the UK, which made it fun to work on, but which also presented a number of technical challenges.

“The pressure was on to get it signed to enable work to start on the roll-out.”

British Gas is the first of the country’s major utilities to undertake a major deployment following publication of the plans of the Department of Energy and Climate Change for a national roll-out of smart-meters by 2020.

Bridgford is confident that Hammonds’ experience on the deal will lead to similar work in the future, adding: “I hope it will lead to some more of this kind of work. It’s quite technical but the more of these deals you do, the easier it will become.”
