Gyrus is a new client for Dorsey & Whitney, introduced through US investment bank Bear Stearns. It then pitched for the work.`In its bid, Dorsey & Whitney was up against comparable US firms in terms of size and capabilities but partner Peter Kohl believes the work was won on the strength of the firm’s technological abilities and knowledge, and because the firm has a lot of experience representing technology companies. Internationally, the firm does intellectual property (IP) work for technology companies including Hewlett-Packard, Agilent Technologies, Novartis and Procter & Gamble.`He says the transaction was particularly difficult because of the time pressure and because there were three different transactions going on. There was the acquisition of Richards, the acquisition of Somnus, and raising the equity.`The London office of Dorsey & Whitney has focused on the high-tech market since it opened, and as well as doing M&A and IP it has done a lot of private equity and venture capital work.
