Greenberg brings in GSK’s head of trademarks

Olswang’S US ally Greenberg Traurig has lured GlaxoSmithKline’s (GSK) global head of trademarks to boost its New York office.

Scott Thompson joined the firm this month as a partner. It is expected that he will bring in GSK as a new client for the firm’s US IP practice.

He will advise clients on global trademark management, IP audits, anti-counterfeiting initiatives and Sarbanes-Oxley compliance.

Thompson spent 20 years in private practice before moving in-house, starting his career at New York firm Kane Dalsimer Sullivan Levy Eisele and Richard, then making partner at Milgrim Thomajan & Lee.

Thompson moved in-house at tobacco giant and former client Phillip Morris, where he became assistant general counsel for trademarks.

Later he became global head of trademarks at Colgate Palmolive, before joining GSK. Of Greenberg’s 1,700 lawyers worldwide, 180 specialise in trademark law.

Thompson’s hire comes at a boom time in the US market for IP lawyers. Over the last couple of months at least 15 IP partners have moved firms.

Greenberg was not the only firm to pick up a new IP client with an in-house hire.

Howrey bolstered its Chicago office last month with the capture of Motorola’s former worldwide head of patents.

Jonathan Retsky joined Howrey from Chicago specialist IP firm Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione. Meanwhile, former 3M general counsel Richard Ziegler joined Jenner & Block’s New York office this month.
