Grabiner takes over at 1 Essex Court

ANTHONY Grabiner QC has taken over as head of London's biggest commercial chambers, 1 Essex Court, following the death of Sam Stamler QC.

Stamler was one of the UK's leading commercial practitioners, specialising in takeovers, and involved in a string of high-profile cases in the 1980s.

In 1982 he acted for Heron International in an attempt to prevent Robert Holmes a Court from acquiring Associated Communications Corporation and in 1989 was instructed in Kleinwort Benson v Malaysia Mining Corporation, the leading case on "comfort letters".

Stamler first read modern languages at King's College Cambridge, before studying law. He took silk in 1971 and was appointed a Recorder of the Crown Court in 1974.

Grabiner has been a Crown Court recorder since 1990.
