Government has second crack at CICS

A BILL to introduce a new criminal injuries compensation scheme has been welcomed by the Law Society “as a great improvement” on the Government's last effort.

The new scheme will

replace the highly controversial fixed tariff system which was declared unlawful by the House of Lords in April.

It will still be based on tariffs, but it will take into account loss of earnings and medical and care costs.

The Law Society, which has been briefed on the new bill at a meeting with Home Office Minister David Maclean, says the new scheme should “mean that the victims of the more serious injuries will receive much larger awards” than under the original tariff scheme.
