Los Angeles-based Gibson Dunn & Crutcher has moved to fill one of the gaps in its international network by opening an office in Singapore.
The firm has officially launched its latest office today (Tuesday 20 May) with a three-partner team hired from Jones Day along with former Los Angeles-based partner Jai Pathak. Corporate partner Pathak joined Gibson in February, also from Jones Day.
Gibson’s new Singapore office will initially focus on M&A and capital markets, project finance and real estate finance. The office is seen by the firm as providing a beachhead into the greater southeast Asia region and India.
“Opening the Singapore office is an exciting step that will help extend Gibson Dunn’s geographical reach to important markets in Asia,” confirmed Pathak, who will serve as the partner in charge of the office and lead the firm’s efforts in the Asia Pacific region.
Pathak was responsible for opening Jones Day’s Singapore office and previously led that firm’s India practice.
The three Jones Day partners are Emad Khalil, previously co-head of the firm’s global projects practice, infrastructure partner John Viverito and leveraged finance partner Saptak Santra. In total, Gibson Dunn is launching the office with 10 lawyers.
Gibson Dunn managing partner Ken Doran, confirmed that the firm is also exploring opportunities for a China office launch.
“Singapore is not a pathway to China but it will help us develop our reputation and profile in the region,” he said. “Breaking into the China market is high up the agenda but it will only be when we find the right team.”
