Clifford Chance is claiming to be the first of the magic circle to appoint a forensic accountant.
Stephen Lewis has moved from PricewaterhouseCoopers to CC's litigation department.
A chartered accountant with PwC for 11 years, Lewis has worked on several jobs with Clifford Chance over the past four years including a major international arbitration case.
In financial investigations he will trawl through clients' records to trace cashflow. He will also help with damage assessment claims, audits and negligence claims.
“I'll help people to ask the right questions and assist clients with quantifying and documenting losses,” he says.
He says other magic circle members may follow suit and bring forensic accountants on board.
“The Woolf reforms mean that firms are encouraged to have independent experts, and that more work should be done in-house. In Clifford Chance's terminology I am a 'shadow expert'.”
“There's a growing awareness, particularly with the size of the firm, that in-house litigation experts are going to be useful. This is a very good appointment for me, partly because I already know many of the people I'll be working with.”
